1. A banjo with two cranks, one to rotate the tool post, one to move
the tool post toward or away from the ways.  All this without having
to unlock or lock anything.
2. A lathe with a knee bar across the front which, on being bumped
Pen Turning Question30 Dec 2007 06:50 GMT12
I've done some turning, mostly small bowls under 10". Have done some
practice spindle turning. I now want to try turning pens. I watched an
instructional video on pen turning and the instructor was emphatic about
drilling the hole in the exact center of the pen blank. I don't ...

Did an outdoor, working show this weekend... kind of fun, but makes for a long
weekend and a lot more to pack & unpack..
The show was at a local sculptors studio and he played with my Jet mini a
little... then told me that before he started working with stone, he carver
Laser Engraving29 Dec 2007 01:23 GMT6
I am new to this group and wanted to say hi.  I've been turning pens
for quite some time now and love it.  I have now branched into Laser
Engraving as well.  If anyone is ever in need of custom engraving of
their turned items, just let me know and I'd be glad to work with
A newbie with an old question28 Dec 2007 00:28 GMT3
Well, once you get the lathe you have to have the right tools and
accessories.  So, what advice do you have for me if I want to buy
quality tools at a good price?  I'm a carver so I know the value of
quality tools, but I'm new to turning so I don't have the exposure you
For unto us a lathe is given27 Dec 2007 18:56 GMT13
Hi, long time listener, first time caller.
Er, I mean I've been lurking for about 6-8 months since the turning
lust started to spring up.  Nothing to post before as I was lathe-less.
But my enabler, um wife, gave me a Jet JML-1014I mini-lathe for
Newbie and Christmas Gift27 Dec 2007 07:34 GMT4
While I'm a regular reader and infrequent poster over at the rec.woodworking
news group. I'm a newbie here.
After years of asking me "Why don't you get a lathe?" my beloved bride took the
problem into her own hands.  There was a Jet JWL-1642-2EVS under the tree.

As usual this time of year things get a bit hectic.  Turned a bunch of
Christmas ornaments and got bored with round so did some 3 sided
bodies just for fun.  I really like spindle turning - you can do a lot
with a small curved edge skew.  Pics in

My first lathe, my first post here25 Dec 2007 07:27 GMT13
I actually had a small toy sears lathe in the '80's, but I gave it away
because it wasn't very good and I wasn't really interested in turning.  I
have a modest amount of woodworking experience, but not with a lathe.  I am
about as green as you can get, a total newbie.
Merry Christmas23 Dec 2007 19:18 GMT11
Back in May, Arnie had been given a lathe and some tools by his wife Maggie
who thought he was too much underfoot and this would be a good birthday
present anyway. After all the kids could give him tools and funny woods for
the next twenty years. What to give a man who does ...
A suggested warm up routine for beginning or occasional turners.23 Dec 2007 07:56 GMT2
Beginning turners or average turners who have been on vacation, or sick,
burnt out, working overtime or doing mandatory holiday honeydo's might
want to warm up on scrap wood before turning expensive blanks.
You can learn technique and method from videos and books and even rcw,
