The 14x43 Harbor Freight Lathe27 Jul 2009 20:59 GMT12
Well, I've had it a week and here is my assessment...
Its heavy, stable and smooth as glass.  Speed changes are a breeze and the
head rotation is flawless.  That being said, I have a few problems with it.

segmented turning27 Jul 2009 13:15 GMT8
I am going to take a stab at a segmented bowl. When gluing together the
"rings" of segments, how does one ensure that the rings remain centered
around the axis rotation for the glue block? It would seem to be that if
done by eye it would be OK for a layer or three but any error ...
Mico wave drying of wood25 Jul 2009 14:41 GMT2
Does anyone have a method they use to dry green wood in the micro
wave.
How big can the piece be? Any special rules on sealing?
another forum25 Jul 2009 07:59 GMT3
As people put less and less on this group I wondered if there was
someplace else where being a member could mean getting a daily e-mail
summary.  Using the AAW site was always a pain since you needed to
login but other people (if there are any left here) may already know
Compare chisels and AWFS25 Jul 2009 02:31 GMT2
Just got back from AWFS in Las Vegas.  It was a good show as usual,
but the attendance was down considerably.  I heard 40%.  You could
shoot a cannon on Wednesday and Saturday afternoon down some of the
aisles and not hit anyone.  The North Hall had materials (paints,
Crush Grind Peppermill23 Jul 2009 05:19 GMT9
I am ready to try turning a peppermill and have a crush grind mechanism from
Packard. The directions indicate that I need to trun two grooves one inside
the body and the other inside the cap. These grooves are sort of like a
groove for a snap ring. They actually hold the ...
Finally burnt it up!15 Jul 2009 05:22 GMT10
After almost 4 years of daily use (at least 5 days a week) , the motor on my
200.00 Harbor Freight lathe quit on me.  I'd have to say I got my $ worth
out of it.  Went to their page yesterday and saw a newer version of the same
lathe for 499.00.  Much heavier cast iron legs, ...
Wild Hare Idea: Biological Imperative Vid - Kinetic Turned Piece10 Jul 2009 14:25 GMT6
With the exception of getting the Power Button to light up
when ON, this Wild Hare Idea is done.

FA - press that would be useful as a pen press or an embossing press08 Jul 2009 04:00 GMT6
some of you folks may find this press useful - it looks to me like it was
originally for pressing snaps onto fabric, but it would make a great pen
press or an embossing press (to press your mark into wood, copper, pweter,
etc)
Need A Lesson In Humility? check out this guy's work07 Jul 2009 13:27 GMT8
Things have fallen off here pretty significantly so I don't know how
many folks will go and see this man's work - but for the Survivors - you
really should see Stephen Hatcher's pieces.  Be prepared for a Lesson In
Humility though.
Variable frequency drive (VFD) use with lathes05 Jul 2009 22:33 GMT4
Hello and thanks for all the material you posters put up for us
lurkers.
This is the good part: I just purchased a Powermatic 90 with a 1hp 3
phase motor with almost all the accessories in the 1966 catalog
Wooden Knitting Needles05 Jul 2009 21:56 GMT33
After a DAGS, SWMBO bought some needles from this place in Nova Scotia:
http://www.lismoresheepfarmwoolshop.com/needles/index.htm,
and is happy with them.
She's also looking for alternate sources, perhaps someone who doesn't
New to turning04 Jul 2009 22:48 GMT2
Ahoy!
I have recently started turning and due to the recent demise of my lathe I
fear it is time to break out the wallet and get a new one.  However I don't
really know what I should be looking for.
Another Nail04 Jul 2009 04:33 GMT6
Hit another nail roughing out a bowl. Missed it with the chainsaw,
bandsaw and two roughing gouges. But the Beijings Best gouge found it.
Is there such a thing as a death wish in a tool?
such a deal - 1/3 hp gast vane type vacuum pump03 Jul 2009 03:10 GMT1
usually wood turners want oilless pumps - I picked up a GAST 1/3 hp vane
type pump, but it is not oil-less - it has an exhaust filter that traps oil
that exits the pump, so this should be no major issue, the downside is you
need to remember to check oil level occasionally - the ...
